Recruit with conviction has many ambassadors who generously give their time. Some have discreet associations and others are actively involved in our campaign. We have 3 directors:
Richard Thomson, Director for Policy and Product Development.
Richard is an experienced project manager, trainer and social entrepreneur. In 1999, he started to promote safe recruitment of people with criminal records as part of an Apex project which facilitated workshops for over 1000 HR specialists. During 13 successful years at Apex, Richard took the lead in a number of projects ranging from performance management, information services, marketing and technology development.
Richard also lectures in higher education and is a board member of No-Offence CIC – the criminal justice forum.
Richard started blogging on safe recruitment of people with criminal convictions in 2011 and after generating considerable interest he teamed up with Roger and Dughall to develop the Recruit With Conviction campaign and social enterprise. He is also the team’s biggest resident nerd, he loves stats, gadgets and apps.

Dughall Laing, Director for Business Management & Development
Dughall has significant experience as a manager in the both Private and Third sectors, having spent several years of his youth working in outdoor activities, he then transferred to entertainment before settling in the voluntary sector. He has over 13 years of practical experience of working with and supporting a varied and complex client group including those with learning & physical disabilities, mental health issues and ex-offenders. During this time he also held network chair roles at local and Scottish level and was responsible for advocating for the development of best practice approaches to service delivery and multi-agency and consortium working.
He continues to look to the development of innovative approaches to project delivery and social entrepreneurship to meet the changing needs of clients across Europe.
Dughall was instrumental in the creation of Recruit With Conviction by bringing the opening directors team together. He isn’t a nerd, preferring to grow good quality fruit & veg and brew fine ales.
Dughall leads on Contract management, Compliance, Delivery and links with Health services.
Roger Horam, Director for Employer Networks
An experienced consultant, Roger specialises in strategic development, fundraising, project design and management, business development, employability and social inclusion. He has been instrumental in raising funding for a wide range of projects and organisations that deliver economic as well as social aims.
Roger has been an active partner in designing and delivering a wide range of European transnational projects that deliver economic and social benefits. These include business incubation, finance for business, social innovation, employability, skills development, and embedding sustainability in training, business support and development, digital literacy and higher level digital skills, creative industries.
With over 10 years on the Edinburgh Jobs Strategy Group, Roger has a long track record in the development and funding of programmes to better prepare people for the world of work and so achieve sustainable employment. Starting with school work experience, through to specialist mainstream employability support for disadvantaged individuals and groups.
